DSTU EN 62305-1…4: lightning protection for solar plants

Does a solar array need an air-termination system? Ukrainian norms answer not with a rule but with a risk calculation under the DSTU EN 62305-1…4 series.

Edition and status

Parts in force: DSTU EN 62305-1:2012, DSTU EN 62305-2:2022 (from 31.12.2023), DSTU EN 62305-3:2021 (from 01.08.2022), DSTU EN 62305-4:2012. Status as of 14.10.2026 per the norms register Solispec checked on 04.10.2026.

The four parts

  • DSTU EN 62305-1:2012 — general principles and protection levels.
  • DSTU EN 62305-2:2022 — risk management: this is where the need for lightning protection is decided.
  • DSTU EN 62305-3:2021 — external lightning protection and separation distance, it replaced DSTU EN 62305-3:2012.
  • DSTU EN 62305-4:2012 — electrical and electronic systems, coordinated SPDs.

DSTU B V.2.5-38:2008 was cancelled from 01.11.2019 and replaced by DSTU EN 62305-3:2021 and the other parts of the series.

Who refers to them

DBN V.2.5-23:2025 clause 4.5, DBN V.1.1-7:2016 clause 6.45 and NAPB A.01.001-2014 (section IV, ch. 1, clause 1.21) refer lightning protection to this series. None of these documents has a rule “PV on the roof, therefore lightning protection is mandatory”. The need comes from a risk assessment: ground flash density NG, building size and surroundings. For Kyiv NG ≈ 2.0 flashes per km² per year.

If the building has lightning protection: the separation distance

s = (ki / km) · kc · l

DSTU EN 62305-3:2021 clause 6.3, formula (4). ki = 0.08 for class I, 0.06 for II, 0.04 for III–IV; km = 1 in air, 0.5 in solid material; kc = 1, 0.66 or 0.44 for one, two and three or more down conductors; l is the path length along the down conductor to the bonding point. If the separation distance cannot be kept, the frame is bonded to the lightning protection and type 1+2 SPDs are fitted.

Example: class III, one down conductor, l = 8 m, air: s = 0.04 · 1 · 8 = 0.32 m.

How Solispec applies it

Solispec does not decide for You whether lightning protection is needed: the hint explains it is a matter of risk assessment under DSTU EN 62305-2:2022 and gives NG for the regional centre. If You state that the building has lightning protection, the engine computes the separation distance by formula (4) from the building and array heights, and if it cannot be kept, advises bonding the frame and fitting type 1+2 SPDs.

Solispec’s calculation is preliminary: for a design it has to be checked by an engineer. The values and clauses follow the current editions of the norms on the date of the page.
